I do everything too quickly.
I skim articles and never finish them; I flip around on iTunes like a crack rat; I eat like a returning hostage. As such I recently (like a year ago) made a commitment to a more methodical approach to these things.
Reading an actual book, in hard cover. Listening to entire records, on a record player. Eating like someone who doesn't live in fear of predators.
My reasoning is that there are certain things that should be done patiently, methodically. Done so that you can enjoy each moment.
My success thus far has been, um, lackluster.
That said, this occurred to me this morning as I read the news out of Oslo. As news broke yesterday, outlets breathlessly assigned blame to Jihadist/Taliban/Muslim groups.
Now it seems that the opposite is true.
A massive bombing Friday in the heart of Oslo was followed by a horrific shooting spree on an island hosting a youth retreat for the prime minister's center-left party. The same man, a Norwegian with reported Christian fundamentalist, anti-Muslim views, was suspected in both attacks.
Wouldn't it behoove news outlets to like, wait a couple hours until they have the facts? What is the benefit to misreporting when so much can be accurately reported?
"Bomb Blows the Shit out of Oslo, Many Dead. Blame Not Yet Assigned"
Just wait, 6, 12, 24 hours until more information arrives.
I'm really narcissistic, so naturally this tragedy in Norway reminded me of me.
Update: Glen Greenwald took my thoughts, expanded them and worded them 1Mx better. Link
